We’re calling on artists of all ages to create scarecrows for our Wicked Pumpkin Patch. Winged beasts and crawly creatures threaten to ruin our pumpkins, so create something spooky (or friendly!) to ward off those pesky critters. Sign up, pick up a frame, and get started. Hurry, supplies won’t last long and we need your help to protect our cherished pumpkins for all Spooktacular guests to enjoy.
We ask for a suggested donation of $35 to enter the contest.
Contestants must use frames (aka, the scarecrow “bones”) created by Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens staff. Once you sign up, you will receive directions to receive your scarecrow frame.
Due to the size of the garden, entries are limited and are first come, first serve.
Scarecrows must be dropped off at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens on Friday, October 16. Staff will place the scarecrows in the gardens.
Creativity and use of upcycled/recycled materials are encouraged.
The winner will be announced Wednesday, October 21.
All scarecrows will be displayed from Friday, October 23 through Sunday, November 1 throughout our 33rd Annual Spooktacular event.
Scarecrow frames are 9’ tall and 3.5’ wide in the arms. Please note the length of the frame when choosing a vehicle for pick up and drop off. 18”-24” will be sunk into the ground.
Items with logos are not allowed.
All entries must be family-friendly. Political, religious, or other inappropriate content is prohibited. Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens has the right to refuse contest entries.
Scarecrows will have a bumpy ride into the Zoo and might be jostled upon installation, so please secure all accessories and loose clothing with LARGE safety pins or staples (small safety pins may release under the weight of clothing).
No stuffing is allowed as it may sag or stretch the clothing. We recommend pinning pants and skirts with suspenders or similar items.
All parts of the scarecrow must be weatherproof to last through the Florida sun, wind, and rain.
No perishable or plant materials should be used including real pumpkins, hay, flowers, or straw.
Heads must be light weight. We recommend funkins (fake pumpkins), plastic candy buckets, stuffed burlap, or plastic nursey pots. Real pumpkins are prohibited as they will rot.
Scarecrow articles will not be returned. The Zoo owns the T-frames. Remember they’ll be outside for two weeks or more, so they may be sticky or full of critters themselves!
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens will not make repairs to scarecrows on display and is not liable for pieces lost.
