Greetings Goober fans!
In mid-March, Goober had surgery to remove a mass on his tail. In order to monitor him and keep his surgery site clean, he has checked in for an extended stay at our animal hospital where he can be most comfortable. So what have we been doing to keep Goober happy and healthy?
Goober loves taking his medicine in a banana, a special treat for him, which he receives each morning. He gets daily visits from his primary keeper who keeps him pampered with all the scratches and mulberry leaves he could want! While in hospital stay-cation, Goober brought along his favorite enrichment item, Blueber the Ball which keeps him company throughout the day! He continues to have a great appetite, chowing down on his daily diet of greens, veggies and hay.
When it comes time to do a bandage change on Goober's tail, Goober's care team needs to get creative. To access Goober's tail, Goober must be lifted up off the ground so his tail can be in a relaxed position. Thanks to one of our very talented security officers, Toby, we have designed the Goober Lift! This wooden structure allows us to place all of Goober's 465 pounds up on the lift for his treatments. Since his legs are completely off the ground, Goober is not able to gain traction and push off and away from us. This also allows him to become more relaxed, which makes exams and bandage changes for our veterinary staff much easier!
With all the extra TLC Goober's care team is providing, we hope Goober is able to return to his exhibit and see all his adoring fans in the near future. Thank you for all your well wishes!
On May 10, Goober was given the 'all-clear' to return to his exhibit.
Moving Goober is quite the production, as he is encouraged into a trailer and driven by tractor down the main path back to his habitat.
Since returning he has enjoyed spending time in his pool, munching on some newly planted grass (which with Goober's appetite will only be around for a limited time! 🙂) and seeing all of our guests again!
