The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is currently seeking a full-time Herpetology Supervisor with responsibilities focused on the following:
Education and Guest Interaction
Staff Management and Development
Brand Management Support
This position oversees and manages the herpetology program including, but not limited to; keeper training, herpetology husbandry, conservation, and adhering to AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) Standards for Management & care guidelines. Additional duties include; staff management, exhibitory, assisting the Curator of Herpetology and Ornithology and the Deputy Director of Conservation with collection planning, animal acquisitions/dispositions and compliance with regulatory issues.
Applicants must be available to work special events that may occur outside of regular work schedule, including evenings, weekends or holidays, as assigned. Also, applicants must have the ability to work independently, exercising independent judgment and discretion along with possessing excellent oral and written communication skills.
Applicants must have the ability to sit for long periods of time, be able to bend and kneel, be able to lift and carry 50 pounds without difficulty, be able to traverse zoo grounds and operate a motorized cart to facilitate tours, greet visitors, and be able to effectively communicate with staff, media and guests. A valid Florida Driver’s license is required.
A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years’ experience at an AZA accredited institution in the zoological field are required. Candidates must be highly motivated with good organizational and interpersonal skills. Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
