Education Animal Keeper Intern - Unpaid


The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is seeking an outgoing, motivated professional for a new internship opportunity.  The Education Animal Keeper Internship offers a great chance to work with a wide range of animals and learn valuable husbandry techniques necessary to becoming a successful zookeeper.

General Statement of Duties

The Education Animal Keeper Intern is responsible for assisting the Zookeeper in the daily care and feeding of zoo animals including the cleaning and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and exhibits.


The successful candidate will directly assist zookeepers in all aspects of animal husbandry, including: behavioral enrichment, operant conditioning, exhibit maintenance, diet preparation, animal observations, and vet care.

Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions and have strong communication skills with staff and the public.  Also must be able to work individually and in a group setting.

The successful candidate will be asked to complete a season-long project as assigned by the Education Animal Keeper.

The Education Animal Care Internship is a commitment of 40 hours a week for a 3 to 6 month time period (depending on successful candidate).

Health and Safety

Must be able to climb ladders/stairs/fences, lift and carry crates/animals/feed weighing 50 lbs., operate power tools, load and operate wheel barrows loaded up to 100 lbs., be agile and flexible to maneuver in and around animals within exhibits, corrals, and holding areas.  Proof of a recent negative TB test is also required.

Requirements – Preferred Start Date: August 18th Internship: August - November

Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate; Candidates should be pursuing a degree in a zoological related field, or recently graduated within the last year; Must be able to work weekends and holidays as assigned; Must commit to a schedule; Must maintain a valid driver’s license.

If accepted, the chosen candidate will be required to pay a $50 fee that covers uniform materials, background check, and a drug screening.
