Job Title - Educator

This position will be involved in all aspects of the Education Department including program presentations and development for grades prekindergarten through adult audiences both on and off grounds.  The daily routine will include teaching, light housekeeping, animal care, and record keeping.  This position interacts with zoo guests on a daily basis.   The educator will execute the weekend and holiday education programs on a regular basis including assisting with special events, supervision of volunteers, and weekend supervision of programs.

This position will be required to work one day on the weekend. To be considered for this position, resumes must be received by July 15, 2008.  Candidates must be available to start on August 5, 2008. 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

A college degree in the life sciences or science education is required for this position.  Background in zoo education, experience teaching in informal educational settings with children and demonstrated abilities in handling exotic animals highly desirable.  Computer experience necessary.  Significant experience may be considered in lieu of college.  Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication skills, flexibility, creativity, and an ability to interact positively with a variety of personalities and with a variety of ages.  A valid Florida driver’s license is required and the candidate must be able to safely drive and maneuver an extended cab van that has a high clearance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time and transverse zoo grounds on foot. 
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions including heat, cold and rain. 
  • Must be able to bend, squat, sweep, and lift 40 lbs. without difficulty.
  • Must be able to talk for long periods of time in front of public audiences.
