William S. Cruzan, Zoo Superintendent

William S. Cruzan was born January 10, 1875.  A Rhodes Scholar, he is reputed to have helped the country of Cuba to set up its monetary system.  His U.S. World War I draft registration gives his residence as Havana, Cuba.

Cruzan arrived in Jacksonville from Havana, Cuba, in 1924.  Cruzan was the Zoo Superintendent (or some similar title) from November 20, 1929 to July 31, 1935 and from October 16, 1935 to September 1, 1955 when he retired (almost 26 years).  William Cruzan died in November of 1961.
