Whatever affectionate nickname they have been given, grandparents are sure to feel special and have lots of fun with their grandkids at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens’ third annual Grandparents’ Weekend Celebration on September 10 and 11. As an extra bonus, grandparents will be admitted free each day of the celebration when accompanied by a paying grandchild (whether they are an adult or child) with a coupon from the Zoo’s website at jacksonvillezoo.org. Grandparents can enjoy touring the Jacksonville Zoo’s award-winning botanical gardens, with its lush flowers, plants and greenery. They can also get up close and personal with the rare and exotic animals native to four continents around the world—and even feed some of them.
On Saturday, September 10th only, Friends of ElderSource will be at the Zoo from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for face painting, a photo booth, child safety fingerprinting, and family activities and will provide useful information for senior citizens!
Electronic scooters and wheelchairs are available for rent on a first come-first served basis, and there are plenty of places for snacks or lunch. One last stop at the Mombasa Gift Shop for a memento will have grandparents talking about this experience for a long time to come.
For more than 96 years, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens has been dedicated to inspiring discovery and appreciation of wildlife through innovative experience in a caring environment. Since its beginning in 1914, with an animal collection that consisted of only one red deer fawn, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens has become one of the top zoos in the nation. It now features more than 1,800 rare and exotic animals and over 1,000 unique plant species. Preservation of sustainable biodiversity is a key mission of the Zoo. The Zoo is a non-profit organization and an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It is open year-round, seven-days-a-week, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located on Jacksonville’s north side at 370 Zoo Parkway, one-half mile east from I-95.
