What are the most important dates in Jacksonville Zoo history?
12 May 1914 – the Zoo is founded near Third and Broad Streets along Hogan’s Creek in the Springfield area of Jacksonville just north of Downtown.
19 July 1925 – the Zoo moves and opens, with a Museum of Natural History, at its current location. Part of Heckscher Drive had to be completed for this opening.
30 June 1955 – the Municipal Zoo is established as an independent City Department.
21 June 1971 – The new Jacksonville Zoological Society, formed earlier in 1971, takes over the Zoo’s operation. This continues to today.
1 September 1987 – Jacksonville Zoological Park is accredited by the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (AAZPA)
1 June 2004 – Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is recognized by the City of Jacksonville as a Botanical Gardens
